DOCTOR CURES SYNTHESIZER WITHDRAWL SYMPTONS

No studio, but music goes on for Berlin producer, Vector Lovers

/Music and Recording PR News/ - BERLIN, GERMANY, March 05, 2008 - When UK producer and songwriter Martin Wheeler (aka Vector Lovers) relocated to Berlin in 2006 he arrived with nothing more than a pair of headphones and a battered suitcase. Finding his feet turned out to be easier than expected - the hardest thing was leaving his entire studio in storage for several months.
"I missed my Moog" says Wheeler, patting the vintage synth used on his 2007 album Afterglow (Soma Records). With no studio and no instruments, Wheeler decided to build his own synthesizer - in software. Working on his laptop in a Kreuzberg coffee shop each day, he appeared the typical Neu Berliner, surfing the web over a cappuccino. "Mentally," says Wheeler, "I was in my own virtual studio... soldering wires and components... trying to piece it all together." Fourteen months and countless coffees later, the 'Dr. Drone' has become an essential part of his setup, responsible for the basslines on his recent Graviton EP (DS93 Records) and for the eerie underwater acid of Drunken Oscillator (flipside of forthcoming Soma single, Ping-Pong).

"The DR1 is perfect for creating fat electro... its very Kraftwerk sounding." says Wheeler, admitting that his old analogue synths get less play time now. Visually, the interface is refreshingly uncluttered, with sexy Kaoss Pad-style controllers inviting creative play. Before going public, the DR1 was subject to some critical testing. "I played samples from my hardware and from the DR1 side by side and asked people to identify which sounds were analogue and which were digital," he says. "It surprised a lot of people when I told them the sound they'd just heard was from this little VST synth I'd been working on."

The DR1 (beta version) is now available from the Dr. Drone website (www.drdrone.com). During beta stage, the fully registered version can be downloaded for under 10 and comes with 64 wonderfully retro/electro-sounding presets by Vector Lovers. A Windows operating system with installed VST host software (such as Ableton Live) is required.
