/Music and Recording PR News/ - September 28, 2007 - Popular music event; Dub In Tha Pub presented by local record label; Little
Rascal Records is on again! Emerging from a 6 month hiatus after being shut down at its original home - The Barrier Reef Hotel, Dub In Tha Pub will bring a mix of live bands and DJ music to a city desperate for some quality music entertainment. Mark your diaries for Saturday 29th of September to be you and your friends 'day of dub' and come and join the rest of us at popular and cosy venue, Green Ant Cantina for a night of skank'n and smooth sounds at Dub In Tha Pub 15.
Dub music is like the weird and crazy cousin of Reggae music. There is a saying; 'Dub Is Reggae, Reggae Is Dub'. Dub is more often instrumental and uses more effects processing (predominately, delay, reverb and pitch). It has an emphasis on a big bass sound and the bass-lines are usually steady grooves, big low end and a full and warm tone. It is a very casual, positive and cruising style of music which suits our laid back tropical lifestyle. It's popularity in FNQ is evidenced by two of the more large scale music events in Cairns involving dub and reggae; ReggaeTown Festival and Kuranda Roots Festival, plus a healthy hand-full of reggae bands hailing from this region, a good dose of dub DJs and a legion of fans.
One of those bands is 'Black Rising' whom will play their first Dub In Tha Pub. Hailing from Kuranda, the boys from Black Rising (formerly known as the Pad Boys) are back on the scene after almost spending a year away from the music arena. But Pad Boys fans will be happy to know Black Rising have not drifted away from their "Rainforest Rock Reggae" style that launched the Pad Boys onto the big stage from the late 90's to their final performance at last years Reggae Festival.
High tempo reggae are still the main ingredients for the boys with a splash of mellow chants singing in their native tongue the Djabugay language. These boys can rock as a three piece band and also can play with several invited guests at any one time on stage. You'll never know who'll end up on stage, it might be you.
So if it's dancing you want, Black Rising will deliver.
Complimenting the live music of Black Rising will be a selection of Cairn's finest Dub DJ's: Billy Dread is a local champion of the dub sound. Often setting up his own soundsystem and dance area at many parties and festivals around FNQ.Billy Dread pushes the dub sound relentlessly to the people at the same time providing a platform for emerging and established DJ's to hone their craft. Also based in Kuranda; Ombudsman has a collection of music that would leave music lovers in complete awe, and most of it is dub, reggae and ska! Ombudsman is the DJ behind all the great interval music in-between bands at past Kuranda Reggae Festivals and this years Kuranda Roots Festival. Ombudsman has had positive collaboration working with Little Rascal Records at these festivals and will soon be able to call himself a 'Dub Rascal' with the inclusion of his track on the upcoming compilation CD; Dub Rascals Volume 3. Lazarus's love for dub music is contagious. His selection of songs in his DJ sets cover the huge expanse of the genre. From roots numbers dating back to the early 70's to the more modern contemporary sounds, Lazarus's understanding and love of the genre is obvious and is a great introduction and educational listening lesson of dub music.
Somewhere between live band and DJ, utilizing live instrumentation as well as turntables and digital instruments is Little Rascal Record's own, Dub Rascal Soundsystem. The Dub Rascal Soundsystem are a Cairns based live/electronic band including label boss Brett Caporn on bass, DJ Symonard on drums and percussion and Jerry Mane on turntables and effects. D.R.S play a hybrid of dubbed out live music, mashed with their own programed creations. With Jerry Mane currently in Barcelona, Spain, the remaining Dub Rascal's have been busy rehearsing, writing and producing about a dozen new songs. Referencing and drawing inspiration from dub records, Dub Rascal's have developed a new set-list of songs with a firm foundation drawn from referencing and learning the grooves from the roots of the genre.
Dub In Tha Pub lives on! The event will continue to provide a stage for local bands and DJs as well as bring to Cairns a selection of dub bands, sound-systems and DJ's from around the country. You can also join the Dub In Tha Pub friends list at www.myspace.com/dubinthapub and be the first to know of upcoming shows, artists and live recordings. Come on down to the Green Ant Cantina and support the local music scene by having a dubbed night out.
